The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced that the enforcement of third-party motor insurance will begin nationwide on February 1, 2025.
This declaration was made during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, January 10, 2025.
This announcement followed NAICOM’s pledge of support to the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the seamless implementation of compulsory motor insurance laws.
During the meeting, Mr. Omosehin emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns and training for police officers to guarantee the success of the enforcement initiative.
While congratulating the IGP on recent achievements, including the successful licensing of the Police Insurance Company, Mr. Omosehin reiterated his earlier request for assistance in enforcing all compulsory insurance policies.
He narrowed the focus this time to third-party motor insurance, a policy he described as crucial for protecting lives and property.
The IGP, in his response, highlighted the alarming statistic that only 30% of vehicles in Nigeria currently have valid insurance.
He underscored the legal obligation for motorists to possess at least a third-party insurance cover and reminded the public of the penalties for non-compliance.
He assured that the Police Force is committed to improving compliance and ensuring safety on Nigerian roads.
