–As Biafran War Veterans Denies Kanu
—Niger Delta Insists Not Being Part Of Biafra
A Coalition of Northern Youths (CNY) are currently beating drums of possible outbreak of ethnic wars between the Eastern and Northern geopolitical zones of the country over agitations for the Republic of Biafra.
Specifically, the CNY had given the Igbos resident in Northern geopolitical zone three months’ ultimatum, expiring October 1, 2017, within which to relocate out from the zone or face the consequences of refusal to comply.
Apart from insisting that all Igbo people should leave the North, CNY further urged all Northerners resident in Eastern region to also relocate to the Northern region.
This directives from the CNY coincides with Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) lashing out at Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) for claiming Niger Delta region as part of Biafran territory.
IYC had argued that the Niger Delta struggle for self-determination (1966) predates that of Biafra (1967) but with similar interests.
Also, the grand patron of Biafran War Veterana, Dr. Ramas Asuzu has rejected the current Biafra agitation as championed by the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Namdi Kanu, saying that he (Kanu) ought to have consulted the elders before plunging into the agitation.
At a press conference at the Arewa House Kaduna, Tuesday, a top member of the Coalition of Northern Youths, Alhaji Abdulaziz Suleiman, said all northern civil society and pressure groups are mandated to mobilize for sustained and coordinated campaigns at their respective states.
Suleiman, who is of the Northern Emancipation Network, said all civil society group should begin to mount pressure on government houses, state Houses of Assembly, local government council secretariats and traditional palaces for steps to be taken to ensure enforcement of the directives.
According to Nigerian Tribune, the signatories to the declaration included civil society groups like Arewa Citizens Action for Change, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Arewa Youth Development Foundation, Arewa Students Forum, Northern Emancipation Network, Northern Youth Vanguard, Northern Youths Stakeholders Forum and the North-east Assembly.
He said: “We are hereby placing the Nigerian authorities and the entire nation on notice, that as from the 1st October, 2017, we shall commence the implementation of visible actions to prove to the whole world that we are no longer part of any federal union that should do with the Igbos.
“From that date, effective, peaceful and safe mop-up of all the remnants of the stubborn Igbos that neglect to heed this quit notice shall commence to finally eject them from every part of the North.
“And finally, all authorities, individuals or groups are hereby advised against attempting to undermine this declaration by insisting on this union with the Igbos who have thus far proved to be an unnecessary baggage carried too far and for too long.”
While in the South East, Dr. Ramas Asuzu who is the grand patron of Biafran War Veterans has rejected the current Biafra agitation led by Nnamdi Kanu saying he should have consulted with elders.
He accused Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Ralph Uwazuruike of MASSOB of championing selfish interests.
He said in an Interview with Vanguard: “While Kanu of IPOB continues to bask in the euphoria of a hero since regaining his freedom, Uwazuruike of MASSOB, started the same way and ended up enriching himself and abandoning the struggle.
“Before Kanu embarked on that struggle, he should have first consulted Igbo leaders widely and seek their input rather than taking a plunge that has not yielded any result so far.
“Late Odumegwu Ojukwu fought for the Igbo course with his whole might, yet, the world powers deprived us that freedom.
“Although Kanu started with negative approach by abusing everybody through Radio Biafra, I think he should have consulted the elders before such liberation journey,. I don’t know if he actually did so, but as the grand patron of War veterans, I suppose to be on the roll.
“I think Kanu and Uwazuruike should have placed the rights of Ndigbo on top priority before the agitation for restoration or actualization of Republic of Biafra.
“I am warning that with the present position of the Country, Nigeria may likely disintegrate naturally, without shooting a bullet.
“I don’t think there is need for any agitation in order to realize Biafra. The only best way for that is through the optimum implementation of the national Conference report.
“This is the only way out. Let the power be at the centre, so that the component zones will not be weak. Let the South East be governed independently while the North West be on their own, likewise others. This will stop the craze of second tenure and the madness of being in power perpetually. Causing violence or abusing people in the radio will not bring any solution to our problem.
“Biafra can never be dead but only when Ndigbo speak with one voice, the dream shall come true. Nnamdi Kanu may be right in whatever he is agitating for but who can predict what the mind habours. Whatever they are doing is on their own, and that is why the South East governors have been mute over the whole deal.
“For me, if Kanu really wants to do anything, he has to properly consult the Igbo Elders Council. They will sit down together to know whether Kanu should be the leader because we have seen them a lot.
“However, I must expressed my happiness over the release of Kanu but I must also note that his detention for so long a time before granting him bail has ended up making him Kanu popular.
“I thank the federal government and President Muhammadu Buhari for having done something that supposed to have been done for a very long time because the continued detention of Kanu has made him to be one of the famous men in the world.
“The demonstration of his mindset for Igbo liberation has given him a pat on his shoulder because I don’t know any Igbo man that would present himself to fight for the liberation of Igbo nation from the shackles of marginalization in Nigeria.
“As for Uwazuruike, the MASSOB leader, I take a swipe on the him because his actions were more of a Chinese revolution which looks like drinking tea in the interest of the masses.
“When Uwazuruike was agitating for Biafra nation, he was not using Limousine but now he moves on fleet of exotic cars with private security and he doesn’t talk any longer.
“So also we don’t know the mission of Kanu for now because within a short time, he may start using private Jet”.
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 6, by its spokesperson, Barr. Henry Iyalla, said while it recognised the Biafra struggle, their agitation predates that of the south east agitation for Biafra.
The group said: “we wish to state clearly that the Ijaw and Niger Delta struggle for self-determination predates the Biafra agitations.
“It is on record that even before the Biafra declaration of independence in 1967, Major Jasper Adaka Boro during the twelve days revolution declared a Niger- Delta Republic in 1966. This was before the advent and struggle for the actualization of Biafra.
“The Ijaw and Niger Delta people had always maintained separate and distinct identity from our Igbo brothers of the South East.
“While we share in the Biafra agitation for self-determination which is not in any way different from our agitation; we wish to clearly state that the Ijaw areas are not part and parcel of the territory of Biafra.
“We will collaborate with our south eastern, middle belt and any other minority groups in the quest for self-determination based on mutual respect and common understanding. In the coming days, we will start the constructive engagement on these terms”.
