The Young Progressive Party (YPP) Candidate for House of Representatives in AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon Young Ugochukwu, has unveiled his agenda for the people .
Among other programmes are legislative accountability, youth inclusion, rent regulation and greater accessibility to the electorate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Young, who is seeking election to the Green Chambers, said his decision to enter politics was informed by his understanding of the role of the legislature in strengthening democracy and checking the activities of the executive.
Answering questions from members of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) on Wednesday in Abuja, he said he had previously stayed away from politics, believing that political activities did not concern him, but later realised that citizens who remain disengaged could leave future generations to bear the consequences of poor governance.
According to him, effective legislative oversight requires lawmakers to scrutinise government policies and proposals rather than simply accepting whatever is presented by the executive.
Young said his legislative agenda would be driven by what residents identify as their most pressing needs, rather than personal priorities.
He proposed quarterly town hall meetings where constituents would deliberate on their challenges and vote on projects or issues they wanted him to pursue through the National Assembly.
“The people’s agenda is my agenda, and I am contesting this election to make a difference,” he said, adding that he would seek to make his legislative activities accessible and transparent to constituents.
On housing, Young promised to advocate legislation aimed at regulating rent increases and agency charges, while also providing pro-bono legal assistance through his foundation to residents facing unlawful or excessive eviction-related challenges.
He said the proposed rent-control initiative would require engagement with other lawmakers, noting that legislation affecting rent in the FCT involves the National Assembly.
Young also identified youth empowerment and political participation as key areas of his proposed agenda.
He said he would promote programmes designed to educate young Nigerians on the political process and encourage more young people to participate in elections and seek elective office.
On security, the candidate said he and his team were exploring ways of addressing the “one-chance” robbery menace in the FCT through technology that could help commuters identify and track vehicles.
He further promised to advocate improvements in healthcare and education through appropriate constituency interventions, while stressing that lawmakers should not take personal credit for projects funded by government allocations.
Young, a businessman from Anambra State who said he had lived in the FCT for more than 15 years, and he is into hospitality, construction, real estate, automobiles and logistics.
He said his business background and experience had shaped his emphasis on accountability, accessibility and digital engagement.
The YPP candidate identified accountability as one of Nigeria’s major governance challenges, arguing that public officials should be held responsible for their actions and decisions.
He also said he would not be dependent on a political godfather, stressing that his loyalty would be to the electorate.
Young urged voters to consider candidates with different approaches to governance, saying his campaign message was essentially to “try something different.”
He added that, if elected, he would prioritise representing the interests expressed by constituents while maintaining regular communication with them.
Young also pledged that he would not remain in office merely for the purpose of retaining political power if he could no longer effectively serve the people.
