In a.dramatic twist, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili’s party, the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), has declared support to President Muhammadu Buhari, few hours after her withdrawal from the presidential race.

This signals that there had been opposition within the party against Ezekwesili’s earlier resolve to contest against Buhari for a change of administration.

Her running mate, Ganiyu Oseni Galadima. Galadima, who also doubled as the National Chairman of the party, gave this indication Thursday at a briefing while accusing , the party’s erstwhile presidential candidate of nursing selfish interests.

Galadima’s initial hidden agenda of working for the All Progressives Congress and Buhari’s re-election bid while pretending to be running mate of Ezekwesili is not far from what obtained in 2015 when some members of the Peoples Democratic Party pretended to be working for re-election of Former President Goodluck Jonathan, while in practical terms they campaigned and worked for the election of President Buhari.

Ezekwesili’s withdrawal from the presidential race early Thursday morning and the likelihood of resignation from the party may have paved way for the National Chairman of the ACPN who was relatively unknown before now, to explore the popularity created by Ezekwesili in course of her campaign, to bargain with the APC.

According to Ezekwesili in her withdrawal statement, “However, despite resistance from the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria on these and other issues, I have decided that it is now necessary to show by action and example my determination on this issue by stepping down my candidacy so as to focus squarely on building the coalition to a logical conclusion”.

She had further declared her commitment towards building a coalition aimed a providing strong alternative to APC and PDP.
