The newly inuagurated board members of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) and Federal Housing Authority (FHA) have been urged not to decipate energy fighting themselves but to bring to bare their various wealth of experiences to reposition the agencies to satisfy the needs of Nigerians.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, gave the directive while swearing-in the newly reconstituted boards.

The 13-member board of FHA has as its Chairman Senator Lawal Shuaibu, while the eight-member board of FMBN has Mr. Adewale Adeeyo as Chairman.

He reminded them that their appointment offer them and Nigerians the opportunity to participate in the decision making process that affects the lives of millions of people who are expected to benefit from the services being rendered by the agencies.

Fashola who noted that very often, some Nigerians complain of things not going the way they had expected, wondered how many of them had volunteered to render service offering their skills freely in order to change things better the way they expected.

He said apart from offering to serve in positions with high titles such as President, Senators and so forth, how many Nigerians can afford to forgo those high titles to serve as ordinary Nigerian.

He said: “Very so often, I think we are familiar with complaints by many of us that things are not heading to the directions we will like. But the question is how many of us volunteer our time, resources and skills changing the things the way we wanted it to be.

“How many of us truly accept to serve with titles that not headline grabbing, titles like President, Senators and so on? Those big titles are good, but I believe we can serve without titles, to contribute to the development of our nation.”

He urged them to forget those frivolities as there are abundant opportunities to serve to contribute to nation building.”

He implored them to acquaint themselves with the copies of the various laws which set up their agencies where their functions and powers were stated in order for them to know the terms of their service and expected roles to play.

Fashola however, reminded them they are to serve as the conscience of the agencies for implementing the policies of government with respect to mortgage housing and mortgage financing in Nigeria.

According to the Minister, “Some of the programmes and projects of these Agencies will come to you for approvals, and it will be your duty to decide whether to approve or not.

“In doing so, you will have to decide whether the proposals are consistent with Law, whether they advance public good, whether they will bring the greatest good to the greatest number of people. As you undertake this responsibility, please permit me to remind you that it is men and women who build institutions and not the other way around.

“Therefore, good institutions are the aggregate of good deeds of good men and women, while unsalutary institutions similarly represent the aggregate of the unsalutary deeds of men and women who, perhaps, were never worthy of the responsibility they were entrusted with.”

He charged them to reposition the agencies provide guidance for the managing directors and management team, just as they are expected to work in harmony, respect each other, work as team and enhance cooperation between board and management.

In their responses, the Board Chairmen of FHA, Sen. Lawal Shuaibu and FMBN, Mr. Adewale Adeeyo assured that they would live up to expectations in their various assignments.
